We know you’re probably upset that the end of Summer is in sight, but rather than dream about the days in the sun, get yourself ready for the bountiful Fall ahead. And, there’s no better time than now to hit up your local farmer’s market for delish produce! Follow Food Republic’s simple tips to a successful shopping day, and you’ll be too busy eating great food to even think about the dog days of Summer!
1. Befriend the farmers
The best way to find out what’s coming to the market is making small talk with the vendors at your local market. Farmers love to see pleasant, returning customers week after week, so give yourself the upper hand. Who knows, maybe they’ll even offer you some “secret” inventory or save you the best picks of the bunch!
2. Get there EARLY
Where there are fresh fruits and veggies, there’s bound to be a lot of hungry customers like yourself. Your chances of getting the best-looking pick at any stand are much better if you get to the market first thing in the morning, so make sure you set your alarm the night before.
3. Bring a reusable market bag
Even though almost every vendor is sure to offer you a bag for your purchase, it’s better to be an eco-friendly shopper. Grab a durable, reusable tote that you feel comfortable loading up with market fare – just remember, it’s bound to get a little bit (or a lot) dirty! Bring your digital camera along too, shots of autumn days are perf for Instagram!
4. Have an idea of what’s in season before you go
You wouldn’t go to the grocery store without a list, so why head to the farmer’s market without knowing what’s fresh? Here are a few favorites coming into season in most of the US in the coming weeks, so stock up!
Apples (and what’s Fall without apple sauce!)
Beets
Brussels Sprouts
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Cabbage
