The start of a new year is the perfect time to re-think your bedding. From cool, crisp cotton to sensual satin, there’s a wide range of thread counts, weaves, and fabrics out there to try. If you’ve never ventured past poly-cotton blends, now is the time.

As a general rule, you’ll want at least three sets of sheets for your master bedroom. Make the first a classic white like these luxurious 600 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets from Hotel Collection. For cold weather months, flannel sheets will keep you toasty.

Now for the fun part ... Try mixing and matching additional sheets in different colors and patterns.  Elegant but understated, I’m just slightly obsessed with the new Bar III Vintage Scroll Collection. Some of my other favorites? Trellis Coral from Trina Turk and Mayan Geo from Echo Bedding. I recommend the latter to clients who want an exotic, Moroccan vibe – a huge trend in home décor for 2012.

Here’s the deal: Sheets and pillowcases are normally made of linen, cotton, or a cotton-polyester blend. The four principal varieties of cotton are American upland, Egyptian, pima, and sea island (the ultra finest).

Whichever fabric type you choose, pay close attention to thread count (the number of threads per square inch). The higher the thread count, the finer the sheet and the better your night’s sleep!
