Ah, April Fools’ Day, the one day of the year when it's not only acceptable to play tricks on your friends, it's practically encouraged! Here, some ideas for celebrating this very special holiday Food Republic style:
Sure there are tried & true gags like replacing sugar with salt. But we’d like to raise the bar. Why not host a dinner party and set the mood by placing a large vase of edible flowers on the table. Shock guests by grabbing a handful and - eating them! Nasturtiums, Dandelions and Zucchini Blossoms are all beautiful and delicious options.
For the main course, serve a “pasta” that’s actually made of vegetables. Use a peeler to make noodles — strips of squash — and sauté. Then, top faux pasta with "meatballs" that are actually falafels. A thick, hearty tomato sauce will help to disguise the switch. To accompany the meal, you could serve grape juice in wine glasses, but we say just go for the real thing!
And for a deceptive dessert? Cook up “fried eggs”! Use an ice cream scoop to form apricot halves to look like the yolk. Next, spoon yogurt around the sides to act as the egg white. To make it even more believable, place your fake egg on top of a piece of home-baked short bread!
