For most sports fans, game day prep is a big deal (and we mean big!). But, the strongest offense in your playbook? The food lineup! So, sit back and focus on the details (gathering your fave teams memorabilia) and let us coach you on serving hearty and healthy fare that will have you (and your guests) cheering for more!
Bold Flavors vs. Fat
Chili is perfect at any party. Packed with beans and lean protein (try ground turkey instead of beef: same taste, but better for you!) it will do the job of making everyone full. As a replacement to all the fats and oils that generally add flavor, try amping up the spices with seasonings like cumin, paprika and cayenne. Not only do these offer great health benefits, but they’ll also up the flavor ante. Use your slow cooker to keep it warm all day long!
‘Chip’ Off the Old Block
Typically “chips” and “party food” go hand-in-hand…but not when it comes to a healthy Super Bowl party. Nowadays, there are plenty of substitutions to the standard deep-fried potato, many of which are pretty delicious! Try serving soy or corn chips for nachos and aim for whole-wheat ingredients whenever possible.
Beans for the ‘Hail Mary’
Everybody loves dip when it comes to a party, but with all that cheese and mayonnaise, most dips are pretty low on the health scale. As an alternative, use pureed or mashed beans – like garbanzo or white beans – rather than cheese and mayo as a binding or thickening agent.
Finely chop garlic and rosemary in a food processor. Add lemon juice and blend until smooth. Add rinsed beans and artichoke hearts and pulse until smooth.
For added smoothness, add a few tablespoons of olive oil or strained yogurt until you achieve the desired creamy texture. Serve up with veggies and soy crisps or corn chips.
