As a designer, I meet many women who always ask me, “How can I be more brave with my look?”

When I was creating the RACHEL Rachel Roy collection, it was always my goal to help young women be brave in life and with their style so that they could start trends of their own, be the voice of style for the people in her cities, and celebrate this beautiful imperfect life that we all live by wearing clothes in new or unexpected ways...

It may sound lofty but fashion can start a revolution of change without girls ever opening their mouths…..How do you do it? Taking risks with your style – here are 3 tips from me on how you can rock a new look with confidence:

Mix prints, patterns and textures

Opposites look beautiful together so don’t be afraid to combine them! Mixing hard prints & patterns with softer ones gives you just the right balance. I love this look: a printed blouse under a textured camel cable sweater. The orange dip dye accent adds another layer of interest.

Tip #2

Stretch your wardrobe

For years I’ve been stretching my wardrobe by wearing a turtleneck under a strapless dress - it helps you get so much more mileage out of your dresses! My tip is picking a turtleneck that has thin fabric and fits close to the body.

Tip #3

Accessorize unexpectedly

I love using pops of color in my outfits the same way I would a ring, necklace, or shoe –  color is an accessory in itself. For instance, this orange puffer coat works just like a big, bold necklace – it’s a statement piece. And, an instant pick-me up. The collar and cut is so flattering to all shapes and sizes. Plus, it’s as comfortable as your favorite cozy blanket.

I also love using accessories in unpredictable ways. My trick for extending the life of your jewelry box is to take your favorite big earring and hook it to your top like a brooch. (This works best when you are wearing cardis because it doesn’t leave behind a hole.) It’s double-duty jewelry!

I love prints! I completely agree with mixing hard and soft; gives your look edge, but tranquility.
