“There is something special about the moment a woman realizes her strength.”
The truth in that statement grabbed my attention from the start. When I learned that defining moment is the essence and inspiration behind Sean John Fragrances latest perfume, Empress, I was sold. Launching today exclusively at Macy’s, Empress is more than just a new scent, it’s an attitude, a frame of mind, a fragrance that celebrates the power and beauty of women.
Wednesday I joined some of the industry’s top bloggers in the Hamptons for an exclusive Sean John Empress launch event. Complete with sand, poolside massages, and manicures, the Ciroc Cabana Club was decked out to make everyone in attendance own their inner Empress for the day. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, the Empress herself, Kelly Rowland stopped by to share her thoughts on the fragrance.
The celebrated R&B star is at the top of her game, launching her hit album Here I Am last week and signing on as the face of Sean John Empress. Kelly spoke from her heart as she told the group that it’s taken a long time to come into her own as a woman and understand her value as an individual, something that most of us can relate to in our own lives. She talked briefly about her time with Destiny’s Child and how her career has always been tied to empowering women. Empress gives her one more way to support that cause. Speaking about the fragrance, she said, “It’s one thing to attach yourself to something, and it’s another when you believe in it as a whole.”
The scent itself is a crisp, fruity floral with notes of Key Lime Pie, Mandarin, Imperial French Berry, Cardamom, warm Vanilla, and Crystallized Caramel. I was a little worried that it would be too sticky sweet for my taste, but after smelling it, I was surprised and delighted at how fresh and alluring this perfume really is. It starts out crisp, confident and dries down to a warm captivating fragrance that I’ll admit I’ve been wearing every day since the event. Its qualities are in fact very similar to the woman Sean “Diddy” Combs hand-picked to represent it – gorgeous, strong, vulnerable, and honest all at the same time.
Before heading back to the city, I had a chance to spend a little one-on-one time with Ms. Rowland to chat about the fragrance and her new album. Similar to my initial reaction, Kelly was hoping she’d like the fragrance. She said she’s always been very picky about her perfume or was happy with wearing a simple lotion alone. She was thrilled when she smelled Empress for the first time, saying, “I connected with it mind, body, and soul. I love how after you wear it for a while you get that yummy hit of Vanilla. It’s beautiful.”
When I asked her the one thing she would want to share with each of you about the fragrance, she took a thoughtful moment and said, “I’m always amazed that men love exactly the things that we as women don’t love about ourselves. It’s the imperfections that make us beautiful and being a woman makes us powerful. I think it’s amazing that Sean was able to capture all that in a fragrance. I want Empress to be more than your perfume. I want it to be a woman’s garment. Something she wears with confidence. Something when you start to waver or question yourself, you get a little hint of and it reminds you that you are powerful, that you demand the room.”
